The 5-Step Pipeline: Clean → Analyze → Forecast → Visualize → Automate
Random prompts give random value. This five-step pipeline turns AI experiments into an automated, auditable finance workflow.
Random prompts give you random value. Pipelines give you repeatable value.
📰 THE NEWS
Agentic tools, Claude inside Excel and Python inside the spreadsheet mean a finance team can now run an end-to-end AI workflow without a data-science team. Yet most organisations are still stuck at "a clever prompt nobody can repeat": Capgemini found only 10% of financial institutions have deployed AI agents at scale, while 80% remain in ideation or pilot.
🔄 THE PIVOT
Stop prompting, start building. Treat every AI workflow like a close process: defined stages, checks between them, and a named owner.
✅ ACTIONABLE TIP: build it in this order
1. CLEAN: have AI write a Python (pandas) script that standardises dates, vendor names and currencies and flags duplicates. Save the script so it runs the same way next month.
2. ANALYZE: run variance and driver analysis on the cleaned data, then reconcile totals back to the trial balance.
3. FORECAST: generate a baseline forecast and backtest it on periods it hasn't seen before you trust it.
4. VISUALIZE: let AI build the chart plus a three-line "so what" under each one.
5. AUTOMATE: only when steps 1–4 have run cleanly for three months, schedule it, with an exception log and human sign-off.
Rule of thumb: never automate a step you haven't validated by hand.
