Barclays Scales Claude, Lloyds Targets £100m: AI Leaves the Pilot Phase
Two UK banks show what scaled AI looks like: Barclays rolling Claude out to half its developers, Lloyds targeting £100m+ of AI value in 2026.
Two of the UK's biggest banks just stopped talking about AI pilots and started reporting AI numbers.
📰 THE NEWS
On 1 October 2026 Barclays announced an expanded partnership with Anthropic. Claude Code is expected to reach 50% of its developers by the end of 2026 and most software engineers in 2027. Its Claude-powered Colleague Knowledge Assistant is used by 16,000+ staff serving 20 million UK retail customers and has handled more than a million searches, while Claude models process around 120,000 Global Markets client emails every day.
Lloyds Banking Group says generative AI delivered around £50m of value in 2025 from 50+ solutions, and expects more than £100m of additional value in 2026 as it scales agentic AI. It is launching an AI Academy for its 67,000 colleagues, and its AI HR assistant resolves about 90% of queries correctly on first contact.
🔄 THE PIVOT
Look at what they measure: searches handled, emails routed, pounds of value delivered. Not "number of pilots". And both pair the rollout with governance and training.
✅ ACTIONABLE TIP: borrow the bank playbook for your finance team
1. Start with high-volume, low-judgement work: queries, email triage, document search.
2. Put a value number on every use case before you build it: hours saved × cost per hour, or errors avoided.
3. Report AI value quarterly, like any other investment, in the management pack.
4. Train before you scale. Once tools are everywhere, an internal AI academy is not optional.
💬 If your CFO asked tomorrow "what value did AI deliver this year?", could you answer with a number?
